Kay de Wolf clinched the 2024 MX2 title, marking the first world championship of his career. Riding for Husqvarna, de Wolf’s consistent performances throughout the season paid off, but the final rounds were anything but smooth sailing. His teammate, Lucas Coenen, was on a hot streak, rapidly closing the points gap. If the series had stretched on for just another round or two, we might have seen a different champion. However, de Wolf delivered when it mattered most, putting in a solid performance in Spain to cement his place at the top of the MX2 world.

The Tense Final Round in Spain

In Moto 1, Lucas Coenen continued his red-hot form, dominating the race from start to finish. Coenen grabbed an early lead and never looked back, comfortably taking the victory. De Wolf, on the other hand, had to fight through the field after a mediocre start. Despite the pressure, he worked his way up, securing valuable points and keeping his championship hopes alive.

Moto 2 unfolded with much higher stakes. De Wolf shot out of the gate and grabbed the holeshot, putting himself in a prime position to control the race and his destiny. Interestingly, it seemed like de Wolf allowed his teammate to pass him early on, possibly to avoid unnecessary risks and ensure a safe finish. Coenen took the lead and went on to win the race, securing the overall victory for the day with a perfect 1-1 score.

However, despite Coenen’s overall win and strong end to the season, de Wolf had done enough. His smart, tactical riding secured him the championship by a margin of 20 points, leaving Coenen just short in the final standings. The Husqvarna duo dominated the season, finishing first and second in the championship, showcasing the team’s strength and depth in the MX2 class.

A Breakthrough Year for Kay de Wolf

For de Wolf, this championship win was a culmination of years of hard work and progression. The Dutch rider had shown flashes of brilliance in previous seasons but had been plagued by inconsistency and injuries. In 2024, everything came together. His ability to perform under pressure, manage races tactically, and stay healthy throughout the season proved to be the key to his success.

Despite Coenen’s late-season charge, de Wolf’s consistency across the rounds ensured he built up a strong enough points buffer to withstand the pressure. His victory in Spain was a testament to his mental toughness and racecraft, as he managed the situation perfectly to secure the championship without taking unnecessary risks.

Congratulations on to Kay and Husqvarna
